As you, dear reader, peruse this blog today, I am not only celebrating my 38th birthday but also nursing a terrible sunburn. Apparently, 50 SPF sunscreen requires more than one application on a very pale skinned person who spends hours in the sun.
Wait, let me explain.
A few months ago, I started a new job and while I wanted a spectacular summer vacation, I don’t have much vacation time yet. So, instead of something grand, I settled on a small trip for myself and my boys, part mini summer vacay and part pre birthday celebration.
My birthday falls right after the long Memorial Day weekend, so I figured the extra day off of work was a great excuse to get out-of-town. My initial plan, after much research, was to take my boys to a cabin at Devil’s Den State Park, which is in Northwest Arkansas and about three hours from our home. (more…)

A few months ago, I learned that a friend from high school, D, lost her battle with cancer. It had been over twenty years since I last saw D, but I cried for her and the terrible loss for her family. It seems as if just yesterday we were sneaking out of my mom’s basement at my annual slumber party. We had our entire lives ahead of us, and time running out on us was simply inconceivable.
My life has always been full of exploits with my girl friends and none more so than D, my best friend in high school.
Closing my eyes, I remember how the cold, hard cement sidewalk was unforgiving as we tried our best to get comfortable for a few moments of sleep. Everyone around us had lawn chairs, blankets, food and drink.
Not us.
Our supplies consisted of a stolen pack of Cambridge cigarettes that was swiped from my home. Apparently, nobody felt the need to tell us the proper etiquette for last-minute camping out at Sears for New Kids On The Block concert tickets. The cigarettes provided heat as we would light one and hold our hands over it – maybe take a puff to heat our lungs too.
That was how we rolled back then, ready for any adventure that came our way. Never mind that we didn’t have enough money for the tickets; nobody bothered to tell us about sales tax either. (more…)

My childbearing days are over. There, I said it. Now I can move on and go about my life as normal.
Sigh.
If only it were that easy.
Being raised in the Southern United States, specifically Arkansas, the long standing joke is that we are all hillbillies and women are kept barefoot and pregnant. In reality, we are actually a modern society with running water and indoor toilets. However, as a woman, from a young age our focus is trained on marriage and motherhood, specifically in that order. Recently, I spent a nervous evening in front of the television, decked out in red and white attire and was almost swayed back into religion, as I hoped for a miracle in New Orleans. Despite the Superdome being the home stadium of the Saints, no miracle was to be found for my team, the Arkansas Razorbacks.
At the end of the game, as I watched the dejected faces of the team mirroring my own frown, I wondered what message was being sent to my two boys.
As a true Southerner in America, the fierce spirit of competition runs through my veins. In Arkansas, we are raised believing in God, the Flag and our Hogs (the team, not the animal). I have grown away from the first two, but the third one remains my passion.
As the mother of two athletic, high energy boys, I have encouraged them, sometimes a bit rabidly, to participate in sports… (more…)

Recently, our community held their annual Christmas Parade, and for the first time, my oldest son participated as a member of the ROTC. As with every other activity that either of my children have been involved with, I knew I would tear up once I saw Isaiah marching with his squad. Sure enough, once the parade turned the corner to where we stood and the Color Guard came our way, I was overcome with emotion.
There was my soon-to-be-15 year old, handsome with his tan skin and hazel eyes in his camouflage uniform, carrying the Arkansas state flag and looking a bit too much like he belongs in the Army. It shocked me to realize how much he and I have both changed dramatically in our fifteen years together. (more…)
