SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: Positively Freeing!

I truly believe that we all have different paths in life because we all have different things to learn. This belief has had a strong impact on me, especially during the last few months.

I am generally patient to a fault and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I reflect on myself and my actions all the time, sort of like being in a constant state of therapy. I am also a very sensitive person, and I take most things personally.

I do not like to let people down at all and that feeling of someone being dissapointed in me, really is hard for me. (more…)

Maggie Ellison

Maggie is so grateful to be raising her 2 children with her husband in the low country of South Carolina. Life at the beach is what she’s always known, although living in SC is new to this NJ native! The beauty of the live oaks and the palmettos takes her breath away on a daily basis and being able to go to the beach all year is a dream for her. Art and music have also always been a part of Maggie’s life, and she is happy that her family has the same love and appreciation for it that she does.
Maggie and her family are also very active. Her husband coaches both kids in soccer, and they like to spend their time outdoors kayaking, biking, swimming, camping, etc. They try to seize every moment they can together, and they feel that it’s not just the family time that is important. They want their kids to know a life of activity and respect for the outdoors, expose them to new things and teach them about the world! Maggie and her family are no strangers to overcoming life's challenges. They've had to uproot their family several times when jobs have been lost in the economic crisis.
They also lovingly face the challenges of having a child diagnosed with special needs. Through all this, Maggie has learned to celebrate the good times and never take them for granted. Her family is everything to her, and she is incredibly grateful for every day she has with them and for every moment she has shared with them. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t tell them she loves them and how lucky she is to be her kids’ mommy. How sweet!

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: Moving…Again?!

Last week, I found out that we will be moving again. This makes 3 times in 4 years, so I may just lose my mind!

Our 1st family move with 2 kids was to a house that we fixed up. Plain and simple, it was sheer hell.

I will never forget making our last run of boxes to the new house at 2am because we had to be out of the old house that day and still had work to do there. My husband was carrying a box of food, which broke open on the bottom. Jars of jelly, mustard, ketchup, etc started rolling down the hill. Everything was dirty and all over the front yard. (more…)

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: Mom Banned From Swimming

I am angry and frustrated, so I came here, to the blog, to vent. Not everyone will agree with me on this, but I need to get this out.

I am being paid to watch another child as a side job. For the past 9 months I have been through many milestones with the little boy  from crawling, pulling up, first steps, walking, teething, introducing solids, getting rid of the bottle, sicknesses, nap schedules and his day-to-day care 5 days a week.

He is almost 15 months old, and with summer coming, I planned on taking him along with my two older kids ( 4 years and 6 years) to the pool.

It gets very hot and humid where we live near the ocean in South Carolina, so in the summer, you are either in the air conditioning or the water.

Tonight, this child’s father told me that his wife is uncomfortable with water and doesn’t want me taking their child to the pool unless my husband is also there.
Please hear me out before you side completely with his parents… (more…)

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: Goodbye, My Sweet Girl

A few days ago, we had to say good-bye to our family dog. Her health was going downhill the last two years and I knew it was coming, but when it happened, it left me in shock and in tears.

After 12 years together, we had to have her euthanized. Prior to having her, I just accepted that this was often a part of having a dog, and it was more humane. But. when you are in the place where you have to decide the fate of your beloved pet, it is very difficult.

Is this ethical? Am I selfish for not doing it? Am I selfish for doing it? Will I be there? Am I betraying her?

The pain of losing a family dog is horrible and one that I did not understand completely until I went through it. (more…)

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: St. Patrick’s Day Fun!

My family has always been very proud of their Irish heritage, so when St. Patrick’s Day comes around in the United States, they step it into high gear and celebrate!

We have green dyed bagels for breakfast and traditional corned beef and cabbage for dinner. Irish soda bread is out all day, and the kegs of green dyed beer are picked up early.

We grew up singing to the Irish Rovers as kids, so this is our favorite Irish music to listen to. Family and friends come over to sing, drink, and dance to The Unicorn Song.

Yep, you heard that right. The Unicorn Song.  (more…)
