The chatter on twitter is already taking off in support of 1000 days left until the 2015 target to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a rally beginning today, April 5th.

According to the Millenium 1000 website, “On that day, a community of individuals, organizations, and institutions will come together to celebrate successes to date, reinvigorate discussion on the MDGs themselves, and begin to advance a post-2015 development framework that builds on #MDGmomentum. Join the community and be a part of the 1,000-minute worldwide rally on April 5th!”

The goals are as follows:

All MDGs

MDG1:  Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

MDG2:  Achieve Universal Primary Education

MDG3:  Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

MDG4:  Reduce Child Mortality

MDG5:  Improve Maternal Health

MDG6:  Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

MDG7:  Ensure Environmental Sustainability

MDG8:  Global Partnership for Development

Elizabeth Gore (@emgoreun) from the UN Foundation tweeted:

“So proud to be kicking off Momentum 1000 tomorrow to support the MDGs! Tweeting live tomorrow morning from @unfoundation!!!! #MDGMomentum“.  Elizabeth will be kicking off the 1000 minute virtual rally at 8:30am EST today.

And Maternity Worldwide (@maternityww) tweeted:

“Women & girls must remain a priority. Pregnancy & childbirth is still the No. 1 killer of 15-19 year old girls worldwide #MDGMomentum

How close are we to meeting these goals?  Cecil A.K. Dadzie (@ghanabakwamena) puts things into perspective and asks an important question:

#mdgmomentum ..wanna knw if we making any progress? Just personalize the mdgs and evaluate- how have you contributed to achieveing the mdgs?”

Good question!  If everyone did something, maybe we could get closer to the global goals for good.  Want to make some noise?  Join World Moms Blog at 6pm EST today and 12am EST first thing Saturday morning to talk MDGs.  At 6pm we’ll be discussing MDG2, universal education for all, including the schools that we visited recently in Uganda!  And at 12am we’ll be discussing MDG4, child survival. We will include our GAVI Global Tea Parties and Shot@Life advocacy for vaccines in the discussion. Hope to see you there!
