Since we celebrated World Moms Blog’s 1st Blogiversary this week, Jen Burden, our founder, asked,
“What has been your favorite moment so far on World Moms Blog?”
The Alchemist of India writes:
“I got my first paid writers’ job after my employer read my first post at World Moms Blog. It was India: In the eyeglasses of the beholder.
I have come a long way from there. I got two editing offers after someone checked out my posts at WMB and another site (Awesome Cuisine). These have been some “Awww, is it me?” moments. The power of affirmations, like Jen mentioned in the Blogiversary post.
I have especially liked Dr. Jeanelle’s post on taking time out for oneself as a mom, and about the emotions when the child leaves the nest. That is one great post and mothers have to always be cautious about their individual identity. I always had that in mind and her post reinstated the same.” (more…)

There’s one day every year to which Grace counts down with unparalleled shiny-eyed fervour. It’s not Christmas, or her birthday, or the start of the summer holidays, though of course all of these are also proceeded by repeated questioning, date-checking and suppressed thrills.
Her anticipation of this year’s event started precisely one day after last year’s event. On that day Grace drifted dreamily past me, trailing her fingers along the furniture, her mind turning on internal images of the night before. I asked her if she was alright: she barely heard me.
When I went upstairs later to monitor her progress towards bed, I found her at the sink in the bathroom, gazing into the mirror at herself, her tortoiseshell eyes lit with the amber light of her imaginings. As I entered the room she turned to me and said, as though continuing a conversation started much earlier: “… so then, Mummy, next year I can be – .” (more…)
Writer, mother, runner: Sophie works for an international news agency and has written about economics, politics, trade, war, diplomacy and finance from datelines as diverse as Paris, Washington, Hong Kong, Kabul, Baghdad and Islamabad. She now lives in London with her husband, two daughters and two step-sons.
Sophie's elder daughter Grace was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome several years ago. Grace is a bright, artistic girl who nonetheless struggles to fit into a world she often finds hard to understand. Sophie and Grace have come across great kindness but more often been shocked by how little people know and understand about autism and by how difficult it is to get Grace the help she needs.
Sophie writes about Grace’s daily challenges, and those of the grueling training regimes she sets herself to run long-distance events in order to raise awareness and funds for Britain’s National Autistic Society so that Grace and children like her can blossom. Her book "Grace Under Pressure: Going The Distance as an Asperger's Mum" was published by Little, Brown (Piatkus) in 2012. Her blog is called Grace Under Pressure.

Where in the world do you live? And, are you from there?
I live just outside of Paris, France.
I am American and grew up in upstate New York, where I attended a small state school. On a whim, I decided to study abroad in Avignon, where I contracted “the travel bug.” From college, I moved to Taiwan for a year, then Manhattan for a year, to Paris for a year, back to Taiwan for another year, and finally back to Manhattan where I traveled to Asia regularly on business and then met my husband. We took a year’s sabbatical in East Africa before having our daughter and moving home. (His home, that is, now mine).
So I feel like I’m from a bit of everywhere.
What language(s) do you speak?
I speak English, of course. I speak French fluently with a slight accent and lots of charming grammatical errors that endear me to my French listeners; or at least that’s what I like to tell myself. I speak enough Mandarin to translate for the woman whose granddaughter attends the same music theory and classical dance classes as my daughter at the Conservatory. This is accomplished with (more…)
Jennie has lived in Taiwan, New York City and East Africa, and currently lives just outside of Paris with her French husband. She speaks rudimentary Mandarin, passable French and has had a varied career in Human Resources, Asian financial sales and humanitarian work. She is currently a mother to three young children, with writing and teaching gigs on the side, and blogs at A Lady in France.

Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Indonesia! We are in for a busy week!
We start off this week on Canada, with Multitasking Mumma. Babyhood – and motherhood – is full of milestones, and Multitasking Mumma talks about one of the most precious, most eagerly awaited – a baby’s first steps.
On Tuesday, we head south of the border to Arizona! Jeanelle Marshawn recently spent time in New York helping her son get settled as he embarks on an exciting new phase of his life. Jeanelle tells us about how being in New York turned out to be as much for her benefit as it was for her son’s.
On Wednesday, we fly across the ocean to visit with Tatter Scoops in Indonesia. She talks about how the expressions of love she experienced as a child were different to those that she and her family now share with her own child.
On Thursday prepare to be spooked! We are off to the United Kingdom, where new writer Sophie talks about Halloween! She tells us about what Halloween means to her family and her special needs child.
We end this week where we started it: in Canada! Kirsten Doyle, who remembers the unveiling of her school’s very first computer in eleventh grade, talks about the role of technology in her children’s lives.
We will also be hearing from two new writers in their interviews this week! On Tuesday, we will meet our Human Rights Warrior, Jennifer Prestholdt from Minnesota, and on Thursday we will hear from A Lady In France!

Ready for another adventure this week, mothers of the world? Let’s get traveling!!!
We’re kicking off the week in New York City! Hey, why not? Maman Aya is back and telling us about her family’s genetic issues, her decision that her family was complete after having 2 kids and her internal struggle on weaning her youngest. Moms, she needs your advice, so tune in!
On Tuesday, we’re talking about breasts! Tara B. from Washington, USA tells the story of her first biopsy and reminds us all to do those self breast exams. A timely post during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the states. Do those self-exams, ladies!
On Wednesday, get out your passports, as we travel over to the Middle East to visit Susie Newday of Israel! Susie’s messages of hope, inclusiveness and positivity, all while working as a nurse in a cancer ward are amazing. We look forward to seeing what she has in store for us this week!
Hop back on that plane and take a flight to Norway on Thursday to catch up with Ambre French, our French mom living in Scandanavia! Ambre is a working mom, who hops a flight back to Paris on business every so often for business — ah, the life!
Friday we’re having a special post about World Moms’ vaccination experiences. We’ll also be talking about two important vaccination programs in developing nations — the GAVI Alliance and the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life. It’s part of our effort to high light more social good on the blog since the Social Good Summit!

I grew up near my father’s parents, and in the summer we would all spend a lot of time together at the summer-house. (In Norway it is quite common to have a summer-house or mountain cottage, where you spend your weekends and holidays.)
My mother’s mum died before I was born, and my mother’s father lived far away. We didn’t see much of him, unfortunately.
But although we saw my father’s parents quite a lot, I felt a slight distance to them. I always felt the need to behave perfectly around them.
I remember that on Saturdays, when I would be allowed to watch a bit of children’s telly, I would walk across the little yard, knock on my grandparents door (which was usually wide open) and ask nicely if I may be allowed to watch that half hour of telly. (more…)
Astrid is a Norwegian thirty something, married, working mum to a wee lad who is almost three and a baby born in 2012! She grew up in Norway, but moved to London, England after she met her husband. After living there during her twenties, she has since returned to Norway and settled down in her nation's capital of Oslo to raise her family.
She finds herself slowly turning into her own mother as her free time is spent reading, walking, knitting and meeting up with other mums for coffee. (Ok, she still secretly loves going to the pub, too!). However, there isn't much time for any of the above, as she now enjoys spending most of her time crawling around on the floor, while playing with her children!
