CANADA: A Gay Day Out

My husband and I live in a culture that is very relaxed about homosexuality. While homophobia still runs rampant in rural and conservative pockets of Canada, Vancouver is extremely liberal.

Gay marriage is legal in Canada, and in fact, some gay friends of ours (who both have the same name – it’s so cute it’s disgusting) just got married recently.

Even our conservative Prime Minister failed at getting the gay marriage laws overturned, and I think he has given up trying. Gay marriage is here to stay.

So when it comes time for the Vancouver Pride Parade, that just seemed to us like a great day out with the family. (more…)

Travel Itinerary for the Week of September 19th!

On Monday we will be in Australia where Fiona @ Inspiration To Dream talks about her entry into a whole new phase of parenting: becoming a grandparent for the first time! She talks about her anxieties and her joys as her grandson made his way into the world.

On Tuesday, we are in Canada with Vancouver mom Carol @ If By Yes. Carol is a former dog trainer, and has been discovering that babies can be trained in much the same way as animals! An interesting little snippet about her is that she is known for wearing inside-out underwear!

We stay in Canada on Wednesday, to hear from new writer Salma. Salma tells us an absolutely heart-wrenching story about a little crack baby who touched her life and her soul. You may want to stock up on the tissues before you read this one.

On Thursday we head south of the border to Massachusetts to hear from our interview editor, Kyla P’an. Kyla is well-traveled, has two gorgeous children and manages to be a stay-at-home mom while pursuing freelance writing.

On Friday Eva Fannon leads us in the Friday Question. Be sure to check it out and chime in with your answers!

In writer interviews, will hear from two new writers this week! On Tuesday we will get to know Twinmom112 from Pennsylvania, and on Thursday we hear from Maureen from Indonesia.

In news this week, new writer Frelle celebrated her birthday on Thursday. We hope she had a great day.

And in other news, from the week of October 3rd will be publishing regular posts from Monday to Friday, and our Friday Question will become the Saturday Sidebar!

CANADA: Undomestic Goddesses Can Be Moms, Too

A few days from now, my firstborn son will be turning eight. EIGHT! How did this happen? I mean, one minute I’m trying to figure out what I’m actually supposed to do with this brand-new tiny scrap of a human being, and the next minute I’m chasing around this long, lanky eight-year-old who keeps growing out of his clothes and eating everything he can see.

When I was a little kid, I was a tomboy. I was not the kind of girly girl who people look at and say, “Oh, she will be a wonderful mother someday.”

Kirsten Doyle (Canada)

Kirsten Doyle was born in South Africa. After completing university, she drifted for a while and finally washed up in Canada in 2000. She is Mom to two boys who have reached the stage of eating everything in sight (but still remaining skinny). Kirsten was a computer programmer for a while before migrating into I.T. project management. Eventually she tossed in the corporate life entirely in order to be a self-employed writer and editor. She is now living her best life writing about mental health and addictions, and posting videos to two YouTube channels. When Kirsten is not wrestling with her kids or writing up a storm, she can be seen on Toronto's streets putting many miles onto her running shoes. Every year, she runs a half-marathon to benefit children with autism, inspired by her older son who lives life on the autism spectrum. Final piece of information: Kirsten is lucky enough to be married to the funniest guy in the world. Connect with her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. CANADA: A Survival Guide For My Child

1. Do not shave your legs until absolutely necessary. You will feel pressure from you friends to do it but be strong. Many of them probably have hairier legs than you do and are quick and fast. Do not be loose and fancy free like these shaving lunatics. The longer you can go without putting razor to skin the better. You will thank me when you’re 30 and trying to find pants on a hot summers day because you don’t have time to drag a blade over your dry skin.

Mullet Hairstyle

2. There are certain things you should not do to your hair no matter what the fashion trend; perms, undercut, rat tails, and the mullet.  Unless you are the lead in a multi million dollar film and you are going to be paying for my retirement, of course. (more…)

Travel Itinerary for the Week of September 11th!

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, we are starting this week’s travel itinerary a day earlier than usual. Later on today, we will hear from Jennifer D’Ambrosio, who was in Lower Manhattan on the fateful day and walked through the World Trade Centre doors before the towers were hit.

On Monday, we will have another commemorative post, this one from Maman Aya of New York City. She writes a heart-stopping post about her escape from danger that day, and of witnessing the flight of the second plane into the tower.

On Tuesday, we head to Washington D.C., where Tara B. describes a trip to the movies! Come read her post about her five-year-old’s very first experience with the big screen!

On Wednesday, we head north of the border to Canada, where Multitasking Mumma provides some very sound advice for her child. We hope her daughter will follow these gems of wisdom as she moves through life!

On Thursday we stay in Canada to hear from Kirsten Doyle, who reflects on how she made the transition from a little girl who used to break dolls into a Mom who actually knows how to pretend she knows what she’s doing some of the time!

On Friday Eva Fannon leads us in the Friday Question. Be sure to check it out and chime in with your answers!

In writer interviews, we hear from veteran Asta Burrows of Norway on Tuesday, and new to World Moms Blog, Carri Brown of California, USA!

Many of our Moms have gone through rites of parenting passage recently as they’ve sent their kids off to school for the first time. We hope that these kids – and their parents – have survived and are settling into their new routines!

And of course, our thoughts go out to all of the victims of 9/11 and their families. As we commemorate this day, we wish you peace and strength.

Friday Question: How do you maintain balance between being a mother and an adult?

This week’s Friday Question comes from World Moms Blog writer, Kyla Pa’an from Massachusetts, USA. She asks:

“What do you do to maintain balance between being a mom and being an adult?”

This is what the World Mom Blog writers had to say.

Kirsten Doyle of Toronto writes:
Oh my, I just had to pick myself up off the floor, I was laughing so hard at this one! It is a hard thing to balance. Even when I am not physically with my kids, I am thinking about them. What they need, where they are, whether I need to buy anything or arrange anything for them…

But I suppose my sanity comes from my running. Not only does it keep me in shape and give me some much-needed time to myself, it allows me to actually see some thoughts through to completion! That just doesn’t happen when I have two little monkeys hanging onto me! (more…)
