NEW JERSEY, USA: Help!: I’m Losing My Mind

When it comes to memory, I have occasionally had difficulty remembering “things”.  And, by things I mean my keys, my cell phone, paying a bill (ouch!), etc.  However, when it comes to remembering past events, I’ve been told that I have the memory of an elephant.

I attribute it to making friends and maintaining good friendships.  But, that memory is not so impressive when there has been alcohol involved. (In that case, my inner elephant fails me, but apparently I’m a lot of fun.)

Even my childhood friend, who grew up across the street from me, still lives vicariously through her own childhood through my memory bank.  There has been many times when I have started a story that begins with “Remember when…” only to find that I am the only one who remembers it.  It is a little lonely when that happens.

We all have a special superpower: I’m sure of it, and a good memory is mine.  But recently, my world got turned upside down, and it’s embarrassing for me to admit.  But, I felt that there MUST be other mothers who have been in my situation, so anyway, here goes…

CANADA: Where’s The – Ummmm – Donut Shop?

About a year ago, my laptop died.  For a technogeek like me, this was nothing short of a disaster, and I became a general nuisance around my household.  I would hijack George’s computer, much to his disgust, or I would hover restlessly behind my betrothed’s left shoulder because I wanted him to get off his computer so I could update my Facebook status.  After a few days of this, Gerard got fed up (who can blame the poor man?) and went out to buy me a new laptop.  James, who had just turned four, accompanied him.

From what I’ve been told, the actual shopping part of the trip was uneventful. It was the trip home that got interesting.

It all started when James, from his booster seat in the back, announced that he wanted a donut.  Gerard told him to look out for a donut shop, and for the next few minutes they were bantering back and forth: (more…)

Kirsten Doyle (Canada)

Kirsten Doyle was born in South Africa. After completing university, she drifted for a while and finally washed up in Canada in 2000. She is Mom to two boys who have reached the stage of eating everything in sight (but still remaining skinny). Kirsten was a computer programmer for a while before migrating into I.T. project management. Eventually she tossed in the corporate life entirely in order to be a self-employed writer and editor. She is now living her best life writing about mental health and addictions, and posting videos to two YouTube channels. When Kirsten is not wrestling with her kids or writing up a storm, she can be seen on Toronto's streets putting many miles onto her running shoes. Every year, she runs a half-marathon to benefit children with autism, inspired by her older son who lives life on the autism spectrum. Final piece of information: Kirsten is lucky enough to be married to the funniest guy in the world. Connect with her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Friday Question: Most Embarrassing Moments?

This week we asked our World Moms Blog writers,

“What is your most embarrassing moment in motherhood?”

All we can say is…get ready to laugh (or cringe) with us!

Kyla P’an of Massachusetts, USA admits:

“My four-year old received a thoughtful but somewhat juvenile birthday gift from an elderly neighbor. The next time we bumped into the neighbor, I thanked her profusely for her kindness and told her how much my daughter loved playing with the gift at which point my daughter chimed in,’no I don’t mommy, remember, it was for toddlers so we gave it to Rachel’s sister?’ (oops!)” (more…)

WASHINGTON, USA: “Privacy, PLEASE!”

I have always been a modest person, and I think I got that from my mom. It may have been a generational thing (she was born in the 1940s), or a cultural thing (she was born and raised in South America).

In any case, I remember that once I got a little older (maybe around first or second grade?), I wasn’t allowed to take baths with my brothers anymore, and I was always instructed to get dressed and undressed in the bathroom, by myself, behind a closed door.

This stuck with me, and as I have aged, I have continued to be a demure person…whether it be at the doctor’s office, in the shower and locker rooms at the gym, or even in the privacy of my own apartment.

Enter labor and childbirth… (more…)

Eva Fannon (USA)

Eva Fannon is a working mom who lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her hubby and two girls. She was born and raised on the east coast and followed her husband out west when he got a job offer that he couldn't refuse. Eva has always been a planner, so it took her a while to accept that no matter how much you plan and prepare, being a mom means a new and different state of "normal". Despite the craziness on most weekday mornings (getting a family of four out the door in time for work and school is no easy task!), she wouldn't trade being a mother for anything in the world. She and her husband are working on introducing the girls to the things they love - travel, the great outdoors, and enjoying time with family and friends. Eva can be found on Twitter @evafannon.
