GUEST POST: UNITED KINGDOM: “Raising Girls”

Best FriendsRecently, I attended a book launch in Bristol, England for, the book, “Raising Girls” by Steve Biddulph.  Steve Biddulph is a child psychologist and family therapist who has spent the last 30 years publicly speaking to over 130,000 parents about boys.  His books are in 4 million homes and have been translated into 31 languages.  Steve believed the subject of boys to be his life’s work and that girls were going “great guns,” but several years ago began to notice that girlhood has literally become a nightmare.

Steve believes that young women are in the middle of a mental health crisis with eating disorders, cutting, bullying, anxiety and depression affecting one in five girls. In addition, La Trobe University, which carries out a study of adolescent sexuality every six years, has shown that in 2008 the percentage of 17 year olds that had slept with three or more partners had doubled in six years.  Over 30 years, this group had grown from about four per cent to twenty per cent of all girls and shows no sign of slowing down.

Girls have lost four years of their childhood.   The pressures we dealt with at 18, they are now battling with at 14.  The trouble being that 14 year old girls are not equipped with the emotional tools to deal with these types of problems. Girls are trying to look together, but really they are struggling. (more…)

Our Hearts Go Out to the People of Boston

525444_405258819581937_353282163_nOur contributor, Nicole Morgan from Sisters From Another Mister, said it best on our World Moms Blog Facebook page yesterday,

“Yet another senseless tragedy in The US, and the world we raise our children in. Our hearts and prayers go out to those in Boston, the families, the community and the terrible loss … I have no words, so I turn to another … ‘If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.Mother Teresa.’ May we teach our children … Nicole.”

And our contributor, Jacki fromm HJ Underway, posted on our Facebook page about a virtual race being run around the world to support (not a fundraiser) the people of Boston.

Hugs to all the World Moms out there.  Let’s do what we can to promote peace around the globe…

Washington, DC, U.S.A.: Interview with Shootie Girl™ – LaShaun Martin

LaShaun-ShootieWhere in the world do you live? And, are you from there?

I live in the USA in the Washington, DC Metro Area now, but grew up between California and Louisiana.

What language(s) do you speak?

English

When did you first become a mother?

In 2003, and I now have two daughters.

Are you a stay-at-home mom or do you work?

Work-from-home mother. CEO of Shootie Girl™ Custom Rhinestone Apparel.

Why do you blog/write?

I write to promote positive messages for women and girls and my company is based on those values. With so many negative images of women and young girls across the country, I try to shed some light on what girls and women are doing RIGHT!

How would you say that you are different from other mothers?

I believe the core of mothers are the same.  What may set me apart is all of the things I’m passionate about and involved in: Wife, mom, CEO, worship leader, board member of 3 organizations, and blogger. For example, I’m the National Director of Social Media and Community Service for Mocha Moms, Inc. a national 501(c)(3) support group for stay-at-home mothers of color. And, I’m a frequent guest of the White House for events focused on women and girls including tea with First Lady Michelle Obama. (more…)

New York, USA: Running in Circles

Moms In Training Team“I think I am going to run a 10K”  I told my husband over dinner one night.  He looked at me like I had two heads.  “If you told me that you were going to swim or cycle, I wouldn’t be surprised – but running is not your thing”.

It’s so true!  It’s not my “thing”.  In fact I hate running, but I received an email from Apple Seeds, an amazing indoor playground offering tons of classes for kids and moms in New York City, Mumbai and Dubai, telling me all about this Moms In Training group.  A group of moms, who train together for 8 weeks leading up to the race day, a women’s run around Central Park on June 8th.  So, I decided to look into it… and it sounded AMAZING!

One year ago a pair of moms, Helena and Kristen, started this program.  It is part of the Team in Training program that helps teams train for races to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The weekly training sessions are led by certified trainers (the Madison Square Park group is led by Meri Treitler, founder of Mommy & Me Fitness). Here’s what you get: (more…)

Maman Aya (USA)

Maman Aya is a full-time working mother of 2 beautiful children, a son who is 6 and a daughter who is two. She is raising her children in the high-pressure city of New York within a bilingual and multi-religious home. Aya was born in Canada to a French mother who then swiftly whisked her away to NYC, where she grew up and spent most of her life. She was raised following Jewish traditions and married an Irish Catholic American who doesn’t speak any other language (which did not go over too well with her mother), but who is learning French through his children. Aya enjoys her job but feels “mommy guilt” while at work. She is lucky to have the flexibility to work from home on Thursdays and recently decided to change her schedule to have “mommy Fridays”, but still feels torn about her time away from her babies. Maman Aya is not a writer by any stretch of the imagination, but has been drawn in by the mothers who write for World Moms Blog. She looks forward to joining the team and trying her hand at writing!
