SOUTH AFRICA: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I guess I have a slightly different perspective on South Africa because my parents emigrated from Italy to here in search of a better life for us. In 1977 I was 8 years old. I knew nothing of Apartheid. All I knew was that Cape Town was beautiful, and we could...

Saturday Sidebar: Are you wearing green?
Today’s Saturday Sidebar is about, well, St. Patrick’s Day. In many places, it’s more than a religious holiday, it’s also a cultural holiday. “Will you be celebrating St. Patrick's Day? If so, how? If not, how is St. Patrick's celebrated where you live?” Check out...
NORTH CAROLINA, USA: A Journey Through Post Partum Depression
"Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone's hand is the beginning of a journey. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours." ~Vera Nazarian One of the most misunderstood parts of motherhood is the emotional roller-coaster you're on right after giving...
PHILIPPINES: Interview with Martine de Luna/Dainty Mom
What do you view as the challenges of raising a child in today’s world?
I’d say one of the biggest challenges parents face these days is trying to keep up with all the information out there about parenting but trying not to be dictated by these trends. So many parenting sites on the Web, for example, claim to be authoritative and expert but really, there’s only so much you can apply in your own family’s situation. Parents today want to be more intentional about their parenting, but it can be confusing to settle on what’s best for one’s family.
MASSACHUSETTS, USA: Too Much
I worry about the things we expose our kids to; forget the Land of Plenty, ours is the Land-of-Excess. Our largesse is accentuated in the names of family cars: Yukon, Armada, Grand Caravan, Town AND Country…Drink sizes come in Venti, Big Gulp or Super Size; and our “single serving” portions are enough to satisfy a family of four in many other countries.

NEVADA, USA: Parenting Is a Learning Process
Like most parents, I want my son to grow up to be a strong, independent and intelligent member of society. He already pretty much is. He’ll be reading before Kindergarten starts this fall, he can do basic math, he uses proper grammar and (usually) enunciates quite clearly. He helps me make dinner, makes his own sandwiches, pours himself milk out of the small pitcher I have specially for him, and he is (almost) always up for helping me out with daily chores.
SOCIAL GOOD: What is Preeclampsia?
“A very sweet nurse sat down next to me, grabbed my hand firmly, spoke clearly and calmly about how awful I was going to feel on the magnesium and asked me to tell her what I was thinking. I told her, ‘I’m scared, I just want to be home with my babies, and I’m nervous about what will happen to me . And I’m afraid that I could die.'”
SOUTH KOREA: What’s In A Name?
My husband’s grandfather passed away days before Christmas. As we reflected on the man he was and the life he led, we were so happy that we’d chosen his name for our son. We did it not only to honor a man we respected very much, but also as a gift to our child. We see it as an honor to share a name with someone who embodied many of the qualities we hope to instill in our son.
NEW ZEALAND: What I Didn’t Expect
When I became a mother, I expected the sleepless nights. I expected that breastfeeding might not always be fun. I expected that my body might temporarily (for ten years or so) look like a bag of laundry. I expected that I would have to be more organised than I had...

CANADA: The Meaning of Brotherhood
For the first time, I am confronted with the ugly reality that at any moment, someone I love could very unexpectedly not be there anymore.
More than ever before, I find myself wanting to hold my loved ones close to my heart. Seeing my mother lose her last sibling has made me reflect deeply on my relationship with my brother. He is the only sibling I have, and this sudden death in the family makes me want to be a better sister to him.

NEW JERSEY, USA: A Mom Worth Imitating
If kids are really good imitators, as we moms know from experience they are, do I really want to teach my daughters through my own actions that they need to give up who they are and their passions at any time of their life? No way!
What I want for them is to follow their dreams, to focus on what truly inspires them because our time on this planet is too short. We should live with some degree of urgency to carry out our passions and find what it is that we are meant to be doing while we are here, before it’s too late.
OHIO, USA: Finding the Sunshine
Being a mom is hard work.
Being a mom after one of your children has died is indescribable.
I thought the days that directly followed the passing of my eight month old son were difficult. But soon those days drifted into weeks. Those weeks quickly drifted into months. Here I am, over a year later, and it still feels like David’s passing was just yesterday.

SWITZERLAND: “No Matter How Long the Winter, Spring is Sure to Follow”
Spring time is taunting us here in Switzerland. When the temperatures crept above freezing last week we slowly came out of hibernation and have gradually been shedding layers of coats, gloves and scarves. It is still awfully chilly, but our need for fresh air allows...
CALIFORNIA, USA: Public School Lottery
In an ideal world, your children leave the house in the morning with their backpacks on and walk down the street to school or to the corner of your street and get picked-up by the school bus. That is how it works (almost) everywhere in United States. Everywhere, that...
