Travel Itinerary for the Week of December 12th!
We are starting off this week in Brazil! Eco Ziva has completed her thesis, and wonders: how did the stress of her studies impact her children? On Tuesday, we head to Nevada to hear from new writer Unintentionally Brilliant, who was featured in a writer's interview...
Saturday Sidebar: What is one thing you will commit to do for yourself in the upcoming week?
This Saturday Sidebar question comes to us from Tara B. In the midst of all the holiday planning, she asked our writers... "What is one thing you will commit to do for yourself in the upcoming week?" Here is what some of our World Moms will be doing for themselves:...
NORTH CAROLINA, USA: On My Own
Something that really surprised me was how much I enjoy having time away from the kids when they’re with their dad. I’ve been a stay at home (and often homeschooling) mom for 12 years. I’ve rarely held part time jobs, and before our separation started last year, I had rarely been out for a girls’ night or ever taken a long weekend away by myself.
CANADA: Caption Contest with JC Little of the Animated Woman!
“Leave your caption in the comments section of this post, and our editors will pick their favorite caption! “
EAST TIMOR: Goodbye Dili
“And so, it’s time to make the giant leap once again, as we move from a tiny half-island of 1 million people to a city of 10 million and a country of 17,000 islands.”
NEVADA, USA: Interview with Unintentionally Brilliant
Something that might set me apart is the honesty between my son and I. I have been open with him about a lot of things, including my struggle with depression and my divorce from his father. I have told him the truth about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. We have honest discussions about death and other topics some people deem the “tough stuff.” It’s not always easy explaining certain things to a 5 year old, but we always work through it all. I leave myself open to his questions and concerns.
MINNESOTA, USA: 10 Things To Do With Your Kids On Human Rights Day on Dec. 10th!
“Human Rights Day is December 10! The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption on 10 December 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global statement of international human rights principles. Here are some ideas for simple yet meaningful ways for your family to celebrate the rights and responsibilities that we all share as human beings.”
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Happy Birthday UAE
In New York, once I had kids, I tried to ignore the 4th of July. To me the 4th meant crowds, heat, and noise: too many people jammed along whichever river was the site of the fireworks, too many picnickers having too much to drink; and too much general mayhem for...
Saturday Sidebar: What holiday traditions are you excited about?
As the holidays approach, we asked our World Moms Blog writers to… “…tell us about a holiday/cultural tradition that you are excited about sharing with your child(ren) this year.” Check out what some of our World Moms had to say... Kyla P’an of Massachusetts, USA...
Travel Itinerary for the Week of December 4th!
Grab your neck pillows and get ready to board for another weekly international adventure with World Moms Blog! Did you catch the interview posted last week for Deborah Quinn in the United Arab Emirates? Deborah is an English Professor at NYU's Abu Dhabi campus in the...
WASHINGTON, USA: Mamma Said What?
I hate it when I lose my cool with my kids, especially in public. I have been a mom for 6 years now (I have 2 boys - one 6 years old and one a toddler), and I work really hard to be constructive and patient with them. I try to redirect and channel their energy. I try...
TEXAS, USA: Toddler Yoga
Lately, I've begun to think of incorporating yoga into my routine with my daughter, Bella, who just turned two. She's always loved to watch me do it, but for a while it was frustrating to try to practice if she was awake. She'd run around, knock me over, pull my hair...
JAPAN: In Review
“There is a lot about this situation (tsunami in Japan) I am still very unhappy about. Receiving a note from your child’s school that said, in effect, “We fed your child radioactive beef. Oops!” was kind of a low point.”
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Interview with Deborah Quinn of Mannahattamamma
It’s one of my hopes for living abroad and traveling together that we, as a family, can create the space to just be – to learn how to look out the window of a train and not be bored. Other challenges? Well, teaching kids to be compassionate and aware of their own privilege; helping them understand that success is not measured by wealth (hard to do in an increasingly corporatized U.S.); and, because I have two boys and consider myself a feminist, how can I raise boys who understand that being “masculine” is not earned by treating women as second-class citizens.
HUMAN RIGHTS: China Uncensored
I landed in China after a thirteen hour non-stop flight from Chicago, feeling elated, excited, tired and uncertain about what to expect. I had been to Asia before with a visit last year to India and Nepal and trip to Japan years ago. I've found these countries...
SOUTH KOREA: The Stages of Sleep Deprivation
“Bargaining The stage in which you think of all the things you’d trade for a few solid hours. For me, this included just about everything I’ve ever enjoyed including but not limited to bubble baths, good books, wine, foot massages, and cheese. I mean, I’m not a champion cheese-eater (though I might be close), I’m a champion sleeper. Anything for my craft.”
Travel Itinerary for the Week of November 28th!
We start this week in South Korea with new writer Ms. V. Remember when you were able to get a full night's sleep? Nope, neither can Ms. V! She takes us on her journey from sleep champion to sleep deprived. On Tuesday, we travel back to the United States. We will be in...
Saturday Sidebar: What has been the best part of parenting so far?
This week’s Saturday Question comes from World Moms Blog writer Maggie Ellison. She asked our writers, “What has been the best part of parenting so far?”
INDONESIA: Boys and Their Toys
Gender related toys are popular here in Indonesia. Boys play with cars, airplanes and the likes, while girls play with dolls, princess and anything feminine. So some people still freak out when they see a boy playing with a “girl” toy.
CANADA: Redefining What It Means To Be A Real Man
“I didn’t realize that I was doing this, until one day he sat me down and asked why. I told him, it was nothing. As the strange behaviour became more intense, he was convinced that he was the problem. It put a huge strain on our relationship. Finally, I confided my deepest secret…I told him that I was an incest and abuse survivor.”
SAUDI ARABIA: Responsibility
“Essentially, my sister and her husband only had to work really hard on the first three, then the first three started helping in a big way with the younger ones.”
