INDIA: The Unwanted Girls of India

INDIA: The Unwanted Girls of India

The girl child of India will be safe only if the personal attitude of a person changes. But the point is you and I and the rest of the people all around the world need to feel confident about being a woman, about begetting a girl and creating a strong woman of her. There needs to be revolution in the minds of people. It is about achieving, about strengths, about confidence, about loving and cherishing the girl (as much as the boy child).

CANADA: Growing Up As An Adopted Child

A few days after my firstborn son graced us with his presence, I sat in my living room cradling him while he slept. I was chatting with my parents, who had traveled from South Africa to herald the arrival of their first grandchild. I looked down at my sleeping baby and my heart filled with so much love that I thought I was going to burst. Softly, I said, “Giving away a baby must be the hardest decision in the world for a mom.”

CANADA: Keeping Our Daughter Safe

The minute my daughter was born, I knew that I would do anything to keep her safe. That I would pay any amount of money to ensure her needs were met, to keep her healthy, and make certain she grew up in a safe environment.

Even if I didn’t have the funds available.

CALIFORNIA, USA: From Picky Eater to Spinach Smoothie Enthusiast

CALIFORNIA, USA: From Picky Eater to Spinach Smoothie Enthusiast

Some of you may remember my post about what a picky eater my daughter used to be. These days, she still has particular taste buds, like her father, but it’s nothing compared to what it used to be. She even likes my spinach smoothies. Sometimes she eats more, sometimes less. It depends on her mood and on the ingredients I use. They are not always the same.

VIRGINIA, USA: Ode to Joy

MALAYSIA: Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is a big topic in my house.

I’m willing to bet a dozen cupcakes it is in yours, too.

Does the 2 year old get enough sleep? Will I ever get a full night’s sleep ever again? Will we co-sleep with the second child? Do we have a good bedtime routine for the toddler? How will the new baby sleep when he arrives? Will the baby wake the toddler or vice versa?

HUMAN RIGHTS: Amina Filali: The Face of Violence Against Women in Morocco

HUMAN RIGHTS: Amina Filali: The Face of Violence Against Women in Morocco

Amina Filali was only 16 years old when she took her own life by swallowing rat poison. Yet her story has caused an outpouring of outrage and support from far beyond her small town in northern Morocco. According to reports, Amina was raped last year at the age of 15 by an older man. Instead of seeing her rapist punished for his crime, Amina was forced to marry him. A few months into an unconscionable marriage, her rapist/ husband was beating her, she told her mother. Her mother counseled her to try and bear it, according to the Moroccan daily al-Massa. Amina must have seen no way out, no future worth living.

INDONESIA: Equal Opportunity Employment?

“Good looking” “Attractive appearance” “Maximum 28 years old” “Minimum height 160cm” These are just some of the lines in job ads that always make me sick to my stomach in my journey to find a new job in this city. To be brutally honest, I might be experiencing a tiny...

FRANCE: The Superior French Mother

But something that I do find to be unique to France is seeing mothers examining the school lunch menu every day with their children and discussing what they ate that day. This is not universal, but I see it much more here than I ever would have in the States. French parents include the art of eating well-balanced meals in the education of their children.

ILLINOIS, USA: Nature and Wisdom

My daughter and went to one of our favorite spots, Lincoln Memorial Gardens. We live in Springfield, Illinois which is the adult home of President Abraham Lincoln. He and his family lived here for over 28 years before his presidency, and he returned to Springfield to be buried in a somber, grand tomb in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Lincoln Memorial Gardens is a vast natural space cultivated to maintain the wild feel of the natural Illinois landscape as it was when Abe lived here over 150 years ago.

CHINA: Eating Safely, Wherever You Live

Since arriving in China, our food philosophy has taken on a new spin. Of course, we’ve had to adapt to local circumstances: there is no Whole Foods-type superstore nearby selling certified organic everything. Indeed, organic is a serious issue here. Official certification is very difficult to obtain. Those who do manage to are often looked at with suspicion (what did they have to do to get it?); those who don’t are unregulated and often unreliable. And it’s not just local Chinese brands and stores; Walmart was recently in hot water in China when it was discovered that their organic pork was not in fact organic.
