CANADA: Running On Fumes
When I have to pick running over sleeping, I really do feel like I’m running on fumes – at least for the first ten minutes or so. But then the endorphins start to flow and I get a glorious rush of energy that carries me through the day. And ultimately, it all makes me a more productive person and a mom who’s less stressed and more fun to be around.
BRAZIL: Nourishing by Example
“Mommy, I want what he has.”
“Eat your snack,” her mother responded.
The little girl stared at her plate, and then at my son’s. “Mommy, I want what he has..
“Daughter, you have chocolate pie!” her mother said impatiently.
HUMAN RIGHTS: KATHMANDU, NEPAL: The Importance of Educating Girls
Fifth grade class in Chuchoquesera, Peru When I visited the classroom pictured above in the Peruvian highlands back in 2004, I noticed that slightly more than half of the students were girls. I remarked on this fact to the human rights activist who was giving us the...

NEW YORK, USA: Boys Will Be Boys
“Chase is the first (and currently only) boy on my side of the family. When he was born my mom, sister and I didn’t really know what to expect, and sometimes, we still don’t.”

This week we honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the United States. He would have turned 83 this year. In his "I have a dream..." speech, Dr. King said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by...
JAPAN: Congratulations, It’s Open!
“Tradition dictates that dirt from the old year must not enter the new one, so the last weeks of December are spent furiously cleaning and and decorating the house to please the gods of the New Year. They seem to be especially fond of mikan, a kind of orange, and mocha, sticky short grained rice that has been beaten with a mallet until it is the consistency of silly putty, and most houses offer this on the family alter.”
INDONESIA: To Miniskirt or Not?
“Last year, much to everyone’s shock, our very own governor of Jakarta said women should not wear mini skirts to avoid being raped after a woman was raped in minivan in public. This outrageous comment led hundreds of women to take to the central street of Jakarta – yes, wearing their miniskirts — and they demonstrated against censorship of their clothing. I highly saluted these women for standing up for what’s right.”

MALAYSIA: Family Traditions
“We came into our marriage empty handed, as far as traditions went. Our families were not big on celebrating occasions, especially birthdays and anniversaries, so we ended up being the same.”
VIRGINIA, USA: Mommy School of Management
“I stopped working in 2007. While I was managing a housing reconstruction program for victims of the 2005 Tsunami in Indonesia, I had my third miscarriage in as many years, and it broke me. It ended my nascent career in international humanitarian aid and development. My husband and I returned home to the US feeling like dejected wanderers with no foundation to uplift us from our failure to create a family.”

ARIZONA, USA: Doing the Same Thing, Expecting Different Results
This year is a another chance to do things differently. Its time to set resolutions we WILL see through. The only way to do this is to do what it takes. We have to make the decision to do what we need to do regardless of how we feel. It is important to create a Vision Board: putting words, photos, images in an area that allows us to stay focused is key. Whatever we focus on the most has our heart and whatever has our heart we ‘give life to!’
ILLINOIS, USA: Don’t Dread the Routine
Call it the weekend-phenomenon. Good things seem to wrap up just as they are getting started. It’s the truth and it hurts, but it wouldn’t be vacation if it went on forever.
FRANCE: Maternal Health is Quite Different Here…
“I remember, having given birth to my daughter in NYC, the doctor saying that nothing “goes in” for six weeks following the birth. No bath, no tampons, no nookie, no nothin’. Here, in France, the story is a little different.”
SOCIAL GOOD: How a Trip to a Third-World Country Changed My Life
Nepal was one of the most eye-opening experiences in my life. I saw firsthand the poverty of the villages, the lack of education and the dire straits that most Nepalese face. I realized not only how blessed we are to live in a prosperous country but also how important it is to give back. I couldn’t just donate $4,000 to Read Nepal and then forget about it. I was determined to change my life and figure out a way to keep giving back.
