The Quest for a Second Child

“I have had two miscarriages resulting in D&C’s both times. With one pregnancy I was more than 10.5 weeks along and had seen and heard the baby’s heart beating twice on ultrasound. My husband and I have had a full work up of testing, and it all comes back fine. So what now? With an official medical diagnosis of “bad luck” we just keep trying. I am committed to being a mom again and am willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that dream.”

Birthday Presents for Christmas

“Five years down the road, I still haven’t quite come to grips with this question: how do you appropriately celebrate the birthday of a child born on Christmas Day? I mean, it’s not like he has the same birthday as, say, John Lennon or Bill Clinton. The kid shares a birthday with Jesus.”

Friday Question: What Song Reminds You of Your Child?

“The tear jerker song for me is Abba’s ‘Slipping through My Fingers.’ Even though it’s about a mother and daughter, I can’t help crying every time I hear it. It so aptly describes how quickly time flies and your kids grow up. I am tearing up as I type this just thinking of it! — Tara Bergman”

Two Halves Do Not Always Equal a Whole

” I find myself entering a new territory of guilt and fatigue as I feel continually stretched in multiple directions. With my grand plan of focusing all my time and attention at home, I did realize that with more than one child I would be constantly divided. However, thus far I feel like that my divided time is not always spent effectively or intentionally.”

Taking the Leap: A Family Journey to Asia

“Once my husband accepted his new role in Timor, the crazy whirlwind kicked in. My to-do list had five columns to keep on top of everything, including family immunization sessions and other delightful appointments. We binge-ordered supplies deemed essential for the next few years and balanced things out by giving away tons, selling loads and throwing out a very satisfying amount of stuff. We found a new owner for our car and a foster home for our beloved dog.”

Create Art Every Day

“When I started home-schooling my daughter for Kindergarten this past September I made the commitment to have her create art every day. My 5-year-old, Sydney, is an early riser. Each morning she’d walk into my bedroom and come over to my side of the bed and say, “Mommy, can you get up now?” To counter her coming into my bedroom so very early in the morning I set up a craft for her each night after she went to bed for her to have for the next morning.”

Kids and Technology

English or Norwegian Xmas?

“Where to spend Xmas isn’t the only decision to be made, but also how should it be celebrated? Although my first Xmas in England was a little bit strange, I soon got used to going to the pub on Xmas eve, but not sure that will work with a one year old…”

Our Journey Through Motherhood

“Many people say that my having gone to federal prison for seven and a half months was what turned my life around. Yes, that played a huge part but watching Isaiah cry as I drove away to begin my sentence, well, that was the event that I can reflect on and know I was changed.”

TV: Friend or Foe?

“The only downside to this arrangement was that my mother allowed my daughter to watch even more television that I did. She would feed my daughter in front of the television to make the process easier for her. The television was basically on all day long, regardless of whether or not my daughter was watching it. What was I to do?”

Global Gift Ideas for Children
