CANADA: Undomestic Goddesses Can Be Moms, Too
When I was a little kid, I was a tomboy. I was not the kind of girly girl who people look at and say, “Oh, she will be a wonderful mother someday.”
CANADA: A Survival Guide For My Child
“6. Don’t ever do ANYTHING in your parents house while they are home that you wouldn’t do in front of their face. I caution you, child… I will know, and I will embarrass you.”
NORWAY: Interview with Asta Burrows
What do you view as the challenges of raising a child in today’s world?
I (of course) view my own childhood as being great, and I tend to compare with that. For instance telly – how much is OK? When I grew up we only had a couple of channels to choose from, and children’s TV was only on for half an hour every day – but now we have TV channels dedicated to children and DVDs and have to figure out how much telly is OK to watch. Also, the world seemed smaller and safer when I was young whereas now it is bigger, and more international (which is a great thing), but it also doesn’t feel quite so safe.
WASHINGTON, USA: Conquering the Big Screen
I just took my son to the movies for the first time. He is 5 ½, and I hadn't taken him to the theater yet because he is very sensitive to visual media. Well, he is sensitive in general. He just seems to hear, see, smell and feel things more intensely than other kids....
NEW YORK, USA: Sept 11, 2001 – Never Forget!
“I stopped about 10 feet from my desk realizing that I didn’t take my purse or I.D. to get back into the building. When I turned around to go back to my desk (which happened to be right up against the windows) and get them, I saw a huge piece of the tower hit the window…”
NEW JERSEY, USA: September 11th, 2011 — Remembrance and Reflection
It is hard to believe that ten years have passed since our nation was changed forever by an act of terror that claimed the lives of 2976 people. Innocent people, who woke up that day to go to work, attend a meeting, fly on a plane or bravely risk their lives to help...

NORTH CAROLINA, USA: Interview with Frelle
I used to think I was really different from a lot of other moms because I practiced attachment parenting when my kids were babies and toddlers, which means that I breastfed and allowed them to self-wean, they slept in bed with me, I delayed and skipped several vaccinations for them all together, and turned to gentle forms of discipline more often than not. I used a midwife and had homebirths with 3 of my 4 children, and I also homeschooled them for several years.
SAUDI ARABIA: To God We Belong, And To Him We Shall Return
S’s thing was not wanting to leave earth. He worried about what heaven was like. I remember one of the last conversations we had about this. S said, “Mama, will there be mobile phones in heaven?” I said, “Possibly.” He said, “Then when you and Baba go I’ll call you, and if it’s nice I’ll come. If it’s not, I just want to stay here.”
MASSACHUSETTS, USA: More than words…
“I cringe when I hear the characters in those movies use the words “stupid”, “idiot”, “shut up” and “moron”. These degrading words are targeted at other characters in the movies.”
OHIO, USA: Dinosaurs, Trains and ?
“He is partly right that I generally won’t purchase a new toy for him simply because he says he wants it. We’ve repeated the pattern too many times – buy him a toy he says he really, really wants – only to have it tossed to the side 5 minutes later because he’s grown tired of it. His attention span is short and the supply of money for useless toys is even shorter.”
INDIA: Wedding Blues
Two months back, I went home to attend the wedding of a cousin. This was my first visit home since I came to the Garden City seven months ago. Also, the first time my one-year old Little One (hereafter referred to as LO) was going to get a taste of his Mom’s place –...

"Have you ever tried too hard?" If we’re ever in public, and I try to give you advice…RUN!! I mean well. I really do, but sometimes that just gets me into trouble. So, here’s my story… I was out of town and killing some time in the Princeton Library in New Jersey,...

CANADA: September and the Start of Something
For several weeks now, I’ve been reading tweets and blog posts from American moms whose kids are back in school already. “I keep getting emails about back-to-school-sales,” said one tweet this morning. “We’re already on the 4th week of school!”
EAST TIMOR: Flying with Kids
We recently made our way back to Dili from Seattle—logging nearly 20 flying hours and two full travel days. It was exhausting, but somehow easier now that the little ones are almost four. They understand that flying is part of a journey and are usually pretty excited...
Canada: Interview with Salma (Chasing Rainbow)
Why do you blog/write?
My hubby forced me to write when I was going through a depression. After a while I found it was a great way to keep in touch with 4 good friends from India, Ireland, the UK and Uzbekistan. Then when my son died, it was my therapy. It’s an outlet that has helped me through many tough times. My hubby’s family in Egypt also keeps up with our antics on my blog.
WASHINGTON, USA: Less than 24 hours in NYC…by myself!
I am sitting at a gate in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) waiting for my flight back to Seattle. You may be wondering..."How does she have time to sit and write with two girls while she is at the airport?" If my girls were with me, I...
