SAUDI ARABIA: Spare The Rod?
I just read an article on the first real-time study to be done on spanking. Researcher George Holden originally set out to study how often parents shout at their children. He asked the parents to tape their interactions with their children and was surprised to hear...

SAUDI ARABIA: Interview With Mama B
How would you say that you are different from other mothers?
I am not sure how to answer this question. I can tell you how my blog and writing is different from other mom bloggers. I am writing from the point of view of a young mother who comes from a country shrouded in secrecy and controversy so I have a unique opportunity to show people that all of us mothers basically want the same thing for our children. We may have different religious beliefs, maybe different priorities but we all strive to raise healthy happy confident children that will contribute something to this world.
INDIA: Parenting Styles, East vs. West
A recent book, Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother, about the Chinese-American method of raising children, almost caused a hurricane in the parenting world. Many were quick to defend their own parenting styles, some supported the author, Prof. Amy Chua, and yet ,others...
NORWAY: The Next Phase: Nursery (Child Care)
The wee lad is approaching one and a half years old, and we have finally been given a space for him in a nearby nursery (childcare). After going back to work in January (when he was one) we have had what we call a “day mummy”, a lady who comes and looks after him for...
CANADA: Interview with MamaRobinJ (Farewell, Stranger)
I started blogging in January 2011 because I was still really struggling with postpartum depression and I needed an outlet for it. I thought I was writing for myself but I discovered a whole community of others in a similar position and have been inspired by the support and the opportunity to support others. That support and friendship extends to moms from all backgrounds – it’s a tough job and I love that we can share our stories through blogging.
Washington, USA: Morning Shenanigans
This morning felt like it came directly from a typical family sitcom. It was a school morning, which meant I needed to have both my sons, ages 5 1/2 years and 14 months, up, fed, dressed, and out the door in time for the 40 minute drive to my older son’s preschool....
NEW JERSEY, USA: Eye on Culture: The 4th of July
Growing up, my best memories of July 4th, the U.S. Independence Day, were picking out my clothes in shades of red, white and blue, helping my mom put our U.S. flag outside our house and getting to run around with fire sparklers around our backyard at night. Sparklers...

Massachusetts, USA: Interview with Kyla P’an
Where in the world do you live? And, are you from there? I live just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. If you are familiar at all with the Boston Marathon, we're half way in, half way out (13.1 mi from the start or finish line). No, I'm not from here. I grew up...
CALIFORNIA, USA: Polish Chocolate Cake
Editor's Note: The defamatory language in this post was incorrectly unedited, which does not comply with our writer's guidelines. The inclusion of such language has detracted from the blog's goal of supporting mothers that we are trying so hard to build in every...
NEW JERSEY, USA: Thank You, Claire Dunphy
On a typical Wednesday night, I’m getting home from work at around 8:30 pm, having a glass of wine, and watching the sitcom, Modern Family, with my husband. By the time I get home, both kids are already asleep, and I’m exhausted after a long day. This aforementioned...
WASHINGTON, USA: Interview with Eva Fannon (The Sidebar Editor)
Where in the world do you live? And, are you from there? I am currently living in the breathtaking Pacific Northwest U.S. in Seattle, WA. Like most people out here, I am a transplant from somewhere else. I became a Washington State resident in 2002 after I got...
ARKANSAS, USA: Remembering Elijah
"You're a hero, Ms. Henderson". Dr. Hall quietly called the time of death as he knelt in front of the rocking chair, where I sat holding Elijah's miniscule body. Once the respirator had been removed, it only took an hour for Elijah's soul to leave this world. Nothing...

CANADA: I Need a Pair of Ruby Slippers. Or, Maybe Lobster Slippers.
I just got back from a visit home, and I feel wistful. There's no place like home. I come from Nova Scotia, on Canada's Atlantic coast, and now I live in Vancouver, on the edge of the Pacific. That's a lot of land between myself and my family. I came out here for the...
